Dunkelweizen

After the 2AM finsih on the Chcolate porter we were up for a quick easy kit the next week. And with new guy Bart wanting to get in on this we let him choose. He’s got a taste for Wheat beers and so the Northern Brewer Dunkelweizen recipie was chosen.

This week was a split however. The County fair was in town and it was Demo Derby night. So half the group (Matt, DJ, J, Rox) went to the derby while I stayed behind with Tommy, and Nick to get the brew started.

The brew was uneventfull. We did make another attempt at the chiller but again clogs at the valve on the pot put a damper on that. We’ve got to come up with a no clog way to get wort out of the pot and leave the troob and hops behind. This has plagued me since I started brewing and I’ve yet to come up with a fool-proof solution.

Nicks Cream Ale finally made it into secondary though it was still showing some slight activity. The Chocolate porter had a quick ferment and while we didn’t get a O.G. reading at this point it was down to 1.015 so I figured it was pretty close to being done…the recipie was only expecting a 1.019 or so…but temperature could play a factor.

Biggest problem of the night was lack of kegs. Tommy, Nick and I did our best to get some emptied but it was tough. Two kegs of Irish Draught ale none of us were that big on but other than J’s oatmeal brown they were the closest to being finished. And J’s was down to just a glass so we didn’t want to finish it without him. Eventually J showed up and we finished his oatmeal brown (all were sad to see it go) and by the end of the night Irish Draught I was also finally drained.

In Primary: Dunkelweizen
In Secondary: Chocolate Porter and Cream Ale
Carbonating: Scottish 80/-,Sweet Stout and Belgian Dubble
On Tap: J’s Oatmeal brown (Finished this night), Irish Draught I (Finished this night) and Irish Draught II.

We did get tastes of the Sweet Stout (going to be good!) the Chcolate Porter (Wow, way more chocolate than in past years!) and even the Belgian Dubble (Hey, DJ found out so it’s safe to post!)
